About the Event

These three workshops have been designed to work together as a series, and participants will greatly benefit from attending all three and building a foundation knowledge of these many different aspects of natural dyeing.

During the first workshop we will experiment with creating beautiful organic designs from steaming foraged leaves pressed onto silk cloth in a tied bundle in a process known as ‘eco-printing.’ Each participant will have the opportunity to create two eco-printed pieces on ethical hand loomed silk strips (each approximately 25cm x 1.1m).

The second workshop teaches the most widely used process of natural dyeing, which involves heating dye materials in a big pot to extract the colour, and using this as a bath to dye natural fibres. During this workshop we will create designs on pieces of hand loomed ethical silk cloth using different resist techniques, and each participant will have two pieces to dye (each approximately 55cm x 55cm) and a choice of two dye vats to use.

The third and final workshop will demonstrate the magical practice of indigo dyeing, which unlike any other dye process uses a fermentation vat to extract the colour. Again we will use resist techniques to create pattern on pieces of cloth, and experiment with this very unique dyeing practice. Each participant will have two squares of organic hand loomed cotton (approx 55cm x 55cm) to dye with.

For more information on each of these workshops please refer to the individual descriptions which give further details.

Materials will be provided for every workshop, and participants will leave with two finished pieces after every session. During each workshop we will break for a meal while the fabric is dyeing and share food cooked by the very talented Soul Food Sisters (this is included in the price).

Each workshop is limited to 10 participants to comply with COVID guidelines on social distancing. As in a cafe environment, you will not be required to wear a mask while seated but will be expected to put on a mask when moving around (although very little moving around will be required).
